Helpful Articles Orthodontists Have A New Way To Shape Smiles! By Dr. Ed Amley The Damon System is a revolutionary new way to treat orthodontic patients. The combination of sophisticated sliding brackets and shape memory wires create less force and move teeth faster. Traditional braces often rely on headgears, key turned, rapid arch expanders, and tooth extractions in combination with braces to correct a malocclusion and facial appearance. With the Damon System, orthodontists can avoid headgears, expanders, and reduce the incidences of tooth removal to achieve dynamic, life-changing smiles. Changes in facial appearance happen very fast, with fewer appointments, and with greater comfort. The contours of the Damon brackets allow quick adaptation to the feel of the braces and enable very effective oral hygiene since there are no wire or color ties to trap bacterial plaque make cleaning more difficult. The light memory wires encourage teeth to move into optimal positions in balance with the lips and face. Because the wires are not tied against the brace, they are instead enabled to "float" in the passive Damon System brackets when a tiny sliding latch is closed once the wire is applied to each tooth. Rather than binding the wire against a tooth with a colored elastic tie, like a bungi cord would do, the passively applied wire experiences less friction permitting teeth to move easily and comfortably. These light pressures then allow the tongue and facial muscles to shape a broad, full smile with the teeth in physiologically natural positions. Consequently, orthodontists using the Damon System are able to achieve results individualized for each patient. The Damon System was introduced to our profession in the mid-90's.
